Jobs and Careers Center at the 2015 AAG Annual Meeting
In recent years, careers and professional development activities at the AAG’s Annual Meeting have been expanding and broadening. Thanks in part to positive feedback and attendance, the 2015 Annual Meeting in Chicago will continue to feature the Jobs and Careers Center, a centralized location where conference attendees can attend panel discussions, participate in workshops, receive free career mentoring, view job postings, network with other geographers, and browse a variety of information and educational materials.
This year’s track of careers sessions will kick off on Tuesday, April 21 with a panel discussion for newcomers to the conference and a workshop on teaching with the book Practicing Geography: Careers for Enhancing Society and the Environment. The afternoon will feature a workshop on networking and a session on teaching and advising about careers in geography. Activities on Wednesday and Thursday, April 22-23, will focus on applied careers in a variety of employment sectors, careers in academia, working internationally, and workshops on creating GIS portfolios and resumes and becoming a certified GIS Professional (GISP). Friday, April 24, will feature a morning session on practical career advice from a variety of employers, and an afternoon session on internships and work-based learning.
Experienced professionals, educators, and graduate students will be available to provide informal mentoring on a walk-in basis during daily career mentoring sessions, from 10:00-11:40 am, Tuesday – Friday, April 21-24. Topics for discussion may include creating resumes and cover letters that will grab an employer’s attention; finding jobs where you can put your geography skills and training to work; developing and maintaining personal and professional networks; long-term career planning; and more. Visitors can also browse job postings in the Jobs and Careers Center at anytime during the career mentoring sessions or between scheduled sessions and workshops. The careers information table will be staffed and accessible each day for general questions, information, and resources. The complete schedule of activities is available online at http://www.aag.org/annualmeeting/jobs_center.
The Jobs and Careers Center will be located in Columbus AB & CD, Hyatt, East Tower, Gold Level, and will be open from 8:00 am until 5:30 pm April 21-24. There is no additional cost for registered conference attendees to visit the Jobs & Careers Center. However, pre-registration is required to participate in the workshops.
