Featuring scholarly reviews of current books which are either geographic in sensitivities or are reviewed and interpreted through the multiple lenses that geography offers, the online journal offers a number of different formats, including the standard review of one book, a review essay in which the reviewer reflects upon a number of books on a particular theme, and the book review fora where multiple contributors discuss a newly published text. Published quarterly, each new issue makes two reviews freely available, and all content becomes free after one year. Book reviews were formerly published in the AAG’s flagship journals, Annals of the AAG and The Professional Geographer, but in 2013 these were brought together in this journal in order to offer greater scope for discussion and consideration of new texts.

Book review solicitation

Book reviews are written on invitation from the editorial office, although the Editor does welcome suggestions, particularly those pertaining to geographically significant works written by scholars in other disciplines. To suggest a recently-published book to review or to volunteer to review a book from our New Books for Geographers book lists, please contact the Editor.

AAG seeks editor for the AAG Review of Books

The AAG seeks applications for two editors for its journal, consistent with the AAG JEDI Strategic Plan.

The AAG seeks applications for the position of Editor of the AAG Review of Books, consistent with the AAG JEDI Strategic Plan. The new editor, whose responsibilities include overseeing the solicitation, review, and publication of book reviews for the journal, will be appointed for a four-year editorial term beginning January 1, 2025. The appointment will be made in mid-2024.

The AAG Review of Books contains scholarly reviews of current books related to geography, public policy and international affairs. It also features review essays reflecting on several books on a particular theme, and book review fora with several commentators and the author’s response. The journal is published quarterly, online only.

The new editor will be expected to make editorial decisions on manuscripts from across the breadth and depth of intellectual activity in contemporary geography. The applicant should thus possess demonstrated expertise in working across geography’s subdisciplines, a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, a broad perspective on the discipline of geography, respect and affection for its diversity, and an ability to work constructively with book review authors. Institutional support for the new editor (especially time released from teaching) is desirable but not mandatory. The AAG will provide a stipend of $10,000 per year to be used for expenses and honorarium at the editor’s discretion.

The editor will work closely with the AAG Publications Director. Editor candidates, therefore, should share the AAG Council’s vision of an accessible, decentralized, and collaborative editorship for the AAG Review of Books.

The AAG strives to build an editorial team that reflects the diversity of the community we work in and the institutional diversity of our field.  The AAG encourages applications from traditionally underrepresented groups such as women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ2SI people, veterans, and people with disabilities. Applicants from teaching institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges, and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), research institutions, Associate degree-granting institutions, and private or public sector and nonprofit organizations are welcome.

Debbie Hopkins brings a background in research, teaching, writing, and editing on transport and mobilities, sustainable urban development, low carbon transitions, and mobile labor. She is an Associate Professor in Human Geography at the University of Oxford, UK, jointly appointed between the School of Geography and the Environment, and the Sustainable Urban Development (Department of Continuing Education) program. She completed her master’s degree (Geography, with distinction) at King’s College London in 2010, PhD at the University of Otago (New Zealand) in December 2013, and postdoctoral training at the Centre for Sustainability (Otago, New Zealand, 2014-2016), and the Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford (2016-2017).

In addition to her responsibilities at the AAG Review of Books, Hopkins is the Associate Editor (Transport and Mobilities) of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Transport Geography. She has also been part of several large research centres and grant applications, including the Energy Cultures project (2013-2016, Otago), the Centre for Innovation and Energy Demand (2016-2018, Sussex, Manchester and Oxford), and the Centre for Research on Energy Demand Solutions (2019-2022, multi-institutional). In addition to this, she leads research on low-carbon transitions, labor and mobilities, largely in relation to freight/trucking and waste. She has co-edited two books: Low Carbon Mobility Transitions (GoodFellow Publishers, 2016) and Transitions in Energy Efficiency and Demand (Routledge (Open Access), 2018).
