U.S. Board on Geographic Names 125th Anniversary Celebration

quasquicentennial-horiz02182015_smallThe U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) will be hosting a 125th Anniversary Celebration at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on 18 September, 2015. The celebration will include a symposium and exhibit from the Library of Congress’ Geography and Map Division.

The symposium theme is ‘Traditions and Transitions’ and Dr. Mark Monmonier (Syracuse University) will deliver the keynote address, “Geographic Names: Roles, Rhetoric, and Resistance.” A distinguished set of speakers will address topics ranging from the origins of the BGN to technology, volunteered geographic information and names in a multi-lingual world. The event is open to the public.
